Top 10

I'm forever trying to make this list for every month!! This time I am putting it into print and really trying to pick my favorite books to read in February!!

Here goes.....these are in to particular order !!

#1 Luanne Pig and the Mysterious Valentine by Nancy Carlson

This is the same sweet little piggie from the book I Like Me!

{Sidenote ...if you don the have that book, buy it ! It's a great book about loving yourself!}

Well little miss Pig receives this mysterious valentine and tries all through the book to figure out who her secret admirer is. It's not until the very end, that she finally realizes it was from --! I can't tell you that or it would ruin the story!!!! Read it to your class and I promise it is a keeper!!!

#2 The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll

Yes, same author as The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, The Biggest Snowman Ever ...just to name a few. In this book, Clayton and Desmond learn to work together. They try at the beginning of the book, but they end up in an argument and tear their valentine in half. The story continues, and in the end, they work together and .....you guessed it! They make the biggest best valentine ever!!

What a great message for kids!! Sometimes working together involves compromise, and understanding what each person is best at. The children will love it because it's familiar ...Steven Kroll's characters are adorable and what better time to take an opportunity to have the children work together to make a valentine- just like the mice in the story. I have them create these valentines for people around the school. Our secretaries, janitors, lunch ladies, and other VIP in the school love getting these home made valentines !

#3 The Valentine Bears by Eve Bunting (Illustrated by Jan Brett)

Mr. and Mrs. Bear are supposed to sleep all winter long, but Mrs. Bear sets her alarm for February 14. She wants to see what Valentine's Day is all about! Mr. Bear has a bit of a surprise himself in this super cute story all about Valentine's Day. I love how it can tie into the hibernation theme that I do every January.

#4 Froggy's First Kiss by Jonathon London

Good old Froggy doesn't let a holiday go by without a cute story!

This story is centered around the theme of Valentine's Day. Duh!! You kids will giggle when you read the title! Wait and see if Froggy get his first kiss!!?? You won't know until you read it!

#5 Little Rabbit's Loose Tooth by Lucy Bate

Little Rabbit is about to loose her tooth! She eats all sorts of foods that she thinks you are "supposed" to eat when you have a loose tooth! Every child understands wanting to have a loose tooth! My kids loved this book, so it's always on my list of books to read every February. Great tie in to Dental Health Month. I actually have this old ragged copy of the book that I can't bear to part with! The kids in my class always love looking on the inside cover at the spot my daughter Lauren wrote her name when she was little!

#6 What Do the Fairies Do With All Those Teeth? by Michael Luppens

This is a fun read, filled with guesses as to what the Tooth Fairy (or Fairies) do with the teeth they collect! I love having the kids guess before we start reading. It's cute to see what they predict. It's a great skill to reinforce, beginning to think about a story and the title, before you begin to read. This is a natural for teaching that skill.

You may have to hunt this one down, as I am not sure if it is in print any longer. If you can find a copy, it is a darling book!

#7 Arthur's Valentine by Marc Brown

I have always read the Arthur books to my kids. It's one of those collections that sits in my basement. Stacks of old Arthur Books, I can't bear to throw out. Some day I will have grandkids, right???

Don't we all have those piles of books we just can't throw away. The Berenstain Bears, Arthur, Corduroy, just to name a few. Maybe you are that young mom, just starting your collection. Take it from an oldie like me, don't throw your books away. These are classics, and there is nothing like getting an old book out of hiding to make your day! Anyway, good old Arthur the Aardvark is getting ready for Valentine's Day and all the characters Marc Brown created are getting ready too.

Read this, and maybe you can find an old VHS to show your class too! I'm really showing my age now!

#8 There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose by Lucille Collandro

I love this book...I love all the "Old Lady" books. Kids love the repetition in Collandro's books and this one won't disappoint. The sequencing, retellings, and recall are just waiting to happen in her books! Don't forget all the rhyming as well!

#9 The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond

One day it started raining hearts, and little Cornelia notices how each one is unique and special. Read this to find out what she did with all the hearts she collected on the day it rained hearts.

We like to think about all the things that would "rain" out of the sky for other holidays after reading this. It's fun to make a list of all of the children's ideas.

#10 Lily's Chocolate Heart By Kevin Henkes

You have no doubt read Lily's Purple Plastic Purse by Henkes. This is another adventure with the spunky little Lily! She is going to save her chocolate heart. Seriously, can anyone "SAVE" chocolate??!!!

Like forever and ever??? Really, what do you think!! LOL

I love this!
